Pumping

Tonight I tried pumping for the first time. Jason helped me figure out how to put the pump together, and then I gave it a go. I was a little apprehensive, having never had any experience with this type of thing, and really having no idea what to expect, but it wasn't bad. Except that after 15 minutes, this was all the milk I had to show for it. This was quite discouraging and I freaked out thinking I wasn't producing enough milk and Kayla was starving. I think I'll take her to the hospital later this week to have her weighed to make sure she's gaining appropriately. She lost 9 oz. while we were at the hospital and gained back only 2 oz. in a week. So hopefully she's gaining at a good rate...we'll find out later this week!

  1. Stick with it...you'll do fine. It takes patience and you have to be relaxed....kind of like when you are really nursing your baby.

  2. I freaked out too the first several times I pumped. It was half an ounce. Even now, 5 weeks later, I feel such a sense of accomplishment for pumping 3 ounces because most of the time I am lucky to get just one.

Just keep with it, your supply will increase.

You can increase your output by pumping after each feeding to make sure your breasts are completely empty. At the end of a week you should see results. I take fenugreek supplements too.

If she's gaining weight and making the right number of dirty diapers, you're making enough.

It took us a full month to get back to her birthweight, and that was after we resorted to supplements because I still wasn't producing enough. I know it's frustrating. I've been there, and still most days like I said, I am lucky to get an ounce after pumping! But my supply is growing and I am sure yours will too!
